Nūpepa to merge with Mālamalama magazine
UHAA's e-newsletter Nūpepa is merging with Mālamalama, the alumni magazine of the UH system. In response to budget cuts, the print version of Mālamalama was reduced from three to two issues per year; it will now be mailed in March and September. As a result, the online version of Mālamalama is being expanded and this will be the last issue of Nūpepa.
A university task force, which included alumni from the UHAA board and employees of the UH System and UH Foundation, was convened to determine how to maximize the available resources. The group determined that the best alternative was to reduce the print version to two issues a year and combine the resources of the UH Foundation Office of Alumni Relations, which produces Nūpepa, and the Creative Services team in the UH System Office of External Affairs and University Relations, which produces Mālamalama, to focus on increasing the online presence of Mālamalama.
The online version of Mālamalama will be issued six times a year – every other month. It has a new blog format, which allows readers to comment on content and includes multimedia features that take advantage of the Web's capabilities.
The news, alumni and events sections will be frequently updated as we receive information pertinent to the broad alumni/public audience.
Notices about the online version of Mālamalama will be sent via broadcast e-mail, just as Nūpepa has been, but the publication will be more robust. To see the online format of Mālamalama, please visit www.hawaii.edu/malamalama.
For more information, please contact Mālamalama editor Cheryl Ernst at ernst@hawaii.edu, or alumni editor Stacia Garlach at stacia.garlach@uhf.hawaii.edu.

Alumni celebrate UH Mānoa Homecoming 2008
The 3rd Annual UH Alumni Association Homecoming Golf Tournament at Hawaii Prince Golf Course on Oct. 8 was hosted by the UH Army ROTC Alumni Association Chapter. As part of the UH Mānoa Homecoming Week festivities, the tournament provided a unique opportunity to pay tribute to all UH alumni who have bravely served our country.
Before the tournament, a short ceremony honored the six UH ROTC graduates who lost their lives in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan: Tom Blevins, Frank Rodriguez, Brian Kong, Jeremy Wolfe, Nainoa Hoe and Jonathan Brostrom. There was an official posting of the colors before tee-off, and Marlene Sai sang the National Anthem.
UH ROTC cadets were on hand to assist with the event, and raised more than $6,000 for their club at the par 3 challenges. Kimo Kahoano emceed the opening ceremony and Ben Vegas entertained the players with some of his hit music. All players won prizes just for participating, the grand prize was a trip to Las Vegas provided by Hawaiian Airlines and the California Hotel & Casino.
On Friday, Homecoming excitement was building as students and alumni rallied on Bachman Lawn before the Wahine volleyball victory against Louisiana Tech. At the match, UHAA awarded its first-ever Chapter Recognition Award to the Shidler College of Business Alumni Association.

Good food, good spirits and good company set the tone for the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Engineering Centennial Homecoming Celebration on Oct. 7 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
More than 600 alumni and friends of the college gathered to enjoy culinary creations from 12 well-known local chefs, including D.K. Kodama, Hiroshi Fukui and Philippe Padovani.
Guests were also treated to a comical rendition of Tina Turner's Proud Mary performed by UH Mānoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, who donned Turner's trademark mane. She was accompanied in good fun by UH President David McClain, Engineering Dean Peter Crouch, Warrior Head Football Coach Greg McMackin and the UH Foundation Vice President of Development Kathy Nelson.

Dedication of the UH Fallen Warriors' Wall
On Oct. 9, the UH Army ROTC Alumni Association and UH Army ROTC program recognized six UH graduates who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country: Lieutenants Tom Blevins ’65, Frank Rodriguez ’67, Brian Kong ’69, Jeremy Wolfe ’02, Nainoa Hoe ’03, and Jonathan Brostrom ’06 gave their lives in conflicts in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Wall of UH Fallen Warriors at the UH Army ROTC building was dedicated to each of these soldiers, who were all memorialized with a framed picture and story of their lives. This dedication was the UH Army ROTC Program and its cadets’ way, both past and present, of honoring the spirit and sacrifice of these Mānoa Warriors who died for our country, made Hawai‘i proud, and led by example for future generations of cadets.
In attendance were friends and family members, Chancellor Hinshaw, Congressman Neil Abercrombie, Major General Lee, and a host of other dignitaries and visitors. Each hero was honored by a short presentation by either family members or close friends of the deceased as their framed picture story was unveiled. For more information, please contact Ed Gayagas, phone 486-2153 or e-mail gobowz@hawaii.rr.com.

TIM alumni honored at Legacy Dinner
For nearly a decade, the School of Travel Industry Management (TIM) and its alumni association, TIM International (TIMI), have celebrated the great achievements of Hawai‘i tourism industry leaders and TIM alumni. On Oct. 23, they continued this tradition, partnering with the Hawai‘i Hospitality Hall of Fame for the second time, and honored six pioneers of Hawai‘i’s tourism industry and two successful TIM alumni.

Ed Wary |

Anthony Wong |
It was a wonderful evening with live entertainment by A Touch of Gold and Na Hoahanau, a silent auction and an opportunity to network with industry leaders and companies. Two TIM alumni were inducted into the 2007/2008 Alumni Hall of Honor that evening: Ed Wary ’68 of Auntie Pasto’s and Dixie Grill restaurants in Hawai‘i, and Anthony Wong ’84 of Singapore, who launched Creative Eateries, a company that developed 18 outlets across eight brands. Both are very successful restaurant entrepreneurs who started at the bottom and worked their way to the top.
The TIM School and TIM International would like to once again congratulate them on their great achievements and for becoming ambassadors of the TIM School and its more than 3,000 alumni.
Bay Area TIM alumni gather for brunch & wine tour
About 28 School of Travel Industry Management (TIM) alumni, family and friends gathered at the DoubleTree Sonoma Hotel & Wine Country in San Francisco as a way to reconnect with fellow TIM alumni in North America. Hosted by Ted Sakai, General Manager for the DoubleTree Sonoma, the event was well attended and special guests included Emeritus Dean, Chuck Gee and past TIM School professor, Morton Fox. Participants enjoyed Sunday brunch before touring three different vineyards around the area. The TIM alumni had such a great time tasting wine, reminiscing about the past, and networking, that they plan to hold future gatherings focusing on reconnecting and building a network with fellow TIM alumni throughout the US. Special thanks go to Johnson Choi, Rita Lau, Holden Lim and Clyde Min for organizing the event and making it a great success.

School of Social Work now "Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work"
The naming of the school after one of our most distinguished alumni allows us to share an identification and honor, one of Hawai'i's most important leaders who was instrumental in developing significant social, cultural and educational programs serving native Hawaiians and all people in Hawai'i. Pinky Thompson's legacy is an inspiration to the school.
