Aloha and Happy New Year!
As I reflect on 2007, the accomplishments of the UH Warrior Football Team were the highlight of the year. These student athletes and coaches should be commended for their outstanding performance; however, more importantly for how they were able to bring together the State of Hawai‘i like never before.
I was fortunate to join thousands of UH fans at the Sugar Bowl. I would like to thank all of those “Ambassadors of Hawai‘i” who shared the Aloha Spirit with New Orleans. I gained so much pride in seeing so many people wearing UH shirts throughout New Orleans, and equally impressive, seeing the sea of white shirts in the Superdome. The Warriors played courageously and their loyal fans stayed until the end to show their support for our team. The singing of Hawai‘i Pono‘i after the game was only fitting to remind all of us that we are one ‘ohana.
We are very excited to have Greg McMackin as our new football coach. Now is the time for us to show our strength as alumni by supporting Coach McMackin and the Warriors. If you are still on the sidelines, we ask that you step onto the playing field by supporting our Warriors. Now more than ever, we need you to “Believe” in the University of Hawai‘i.
Mahalo!

The Colorado Chapter of the UH Alumni Association plans to host its first event on Aug. 23 at Coors Field in Denver, when the Colorado Rockies take on the Cincinnati Reds. Ticket prices are TBD based on number of tickets purchased.
The chapter is also planning a UH Alumni night at the Colorado 14ers NBA Development League in Broomfield, Colo., to support UH alumnus Julian Sensley. For more information or if you’d like to attend either event, contact chapter president Lauri Harrison at LH@LauriHarrison.com.
University of Hawai‘i Los Angeles/Orange County alumni were seen throughout Southern California this fall extolling the virtues of the UH at 11 high school college fairs and six community college transfer days. This volunteer opportunity started in 2001 and has continued annually with chapter members eagerly meeting with prospective UH students and their parents. Working in partnership with Belinda Nagashima of the Office of Admissions and Records, volunteers are provided all the materials necessary to inform attendees of the diverse opportunities offered at UH-Mānoa.
UHAA volunteers included Phil Edwards, Faith Ichida, Dan Koenisberger, Jane and Victor Pang, Park McGraw, Donna Christopher, Rick and Andrea Wagner, Jayne Klunder, Juanita Baltierra, Jeff Rowe, Ray Kang and John Amaki. The UH table is traditionally one of the most often-visited, and this year was no exception. Volunteers reported the events to be rewarding, fulfilling and a great way to give back to their alma mater.
Dr. Morton Fox, UH professor emeritus, and his wife Giselle graciously hosted a lu‘au at their home in Las Vegas on Oct. 14 as a fundraiser for the UHAA – Las Vegas chapter. Mrs. Fox made all the food, and Hawaiian and Tahitian singers and dancers from Gary Haleamau’s UaMau Entertainers delighted the crowd. The UHAA – Las Vegas chapter has about has 130 members. Please click here to see more photos from the event.
The UHAA – Pacific Northwest (UHAA-PNW) chapter has named Dawn Mallory as its new president. Mallory has actively participated in PNW events and activities for the past several years as a member of its board. She has always been quick to lend a hand with a variety of tasks and brings energy and ideas to chapter discussions. She is excited about this opportunity and looks forward to serving as the group’s president.
Her first endeavor was gathering the Northwest Warriors to scramble and party around our phenomenal Football Warriors! She can be contacted by e-mail dawn@autograf.com.

Last year marked the 35th anniversary of women’s athletics at the University of Hawai‘i. It was also the 35th anniversary of Title IX legislation, authored by Hawaii Congresswoman Patsy Mink. For her significant contributions toward equal rights in this country, Congress renamed the Title IX amendment of the Higher Education Act the “Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.” Congresswoman Mink’s achievements were recognized with a series of commemorative events in her honor.
Constance H. Lau, chairman, president and CEO of American Savings Bank, and president & CEO of Hawaiian Electric Industries, presents a check for $167,000 raised in support of UH women’s athletics at the homecoming week UH Wahine volleyball game.
To raise the profile of this initiative in advance of the commemorative dinner and extend fundraising reach in support of UH women’s athletics, a cocktail reception in Congresswoman Mink’s honor was held in Washington, D.C. on Capitol Hill on June 21. A commemorative dinner was held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Aug. 30, featuring keynote speaker and three-time Olympic gold-medalist, Jackie Joyner-Kersee. A VIP cocktail reception was held before the dinner. Funds raised will be used to endow a women’s athletic scholarship in Mink’s name at the University of Hawai‘i.
The School of Travel Industry Management (TIM), TIM International Alumni Association and the Hawai‘i Hospitality Hall of Fame held the “Celebrate a Legacy in Tourism” event, posthumously inducting 25 leaders of the Hawai‘i tourism industry into its Hall of Fame, on Nov. 20, 2007 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. More than 400 people attended the gala, participated in a silent auction and viewed a historical photo pictorial that highlighted the achievements of the honorees. The Hawai‘i Hospitality Board of Trustees presented commemorative wooden poi pounders to each inductee’s family and/or representative, and unveiled the wall of fame for this charter group.

‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i’s planetarium is the first in the world to have 3D stereoscopic capabilities. The new system heightens general audience entertainment experiences, but also becomes a tool for astronomers’ research by allowing them to see how celestial bodies are situated and how the universe is changing.
On Jan. 19 ‘Imiloa unveiled Sky-Skan’s cutting-edge definiti 3D theater technology integrated with Sony SXRD projectors. The new technology allows for a more vibrant picture than traditional systems and makes ‘Imiloa’s planetarium shows even more entertaining and engaging on its gigantic 52-foot full planetarium dome.
Located on a nine-acre campus above the University of Hawaii-Hilo, with spectacular views of Hilo Bay, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center (formerly called Maunakea Astronomy Education Center) provides a unique experience for visitors, students and families seeking to explore the connections between Hawaiian cultural traditions and the science of astronomy.
'Imiloa features interactive exhibits, planetarium shows, group tours, a cafe, and a full schedule of events.

Maui Community College’s new Associate in Science in Dental Hygiene emerged from the oral health crisis on Maui and the need for dental assistants and dental hygienists. These needs were first presented to the college in 2001, when Maui dentists and healthcare officials estimated that more than 30 percent of Maui residents had no access to dental care. When Maui County dentists were surveyed, 95 percent indicated a shortage of dental assistants and 94 percent indicated a shortage of dental hygienists. The new program will meet student, county and state needs for dental hygienists and will prepare the dental hygiene students to competently provide care to clients of diverse social, economic and cultural backgrounds while demonstrating the academic and clinical knowledge and skills required for the profession.

Interested in learning more about the early days of UH?
The Hawaii Collegian, first published in June 1910, was one of the university's earliest publications – possibly the first. Produced by the Associated Students of the College of Hawaii, the book contained articles written by students and the first 14 faculty members. The UH Women's Campus Club, with support from Hawaiian Electric Company, has resurrected this historical document for a centennial year reprint. You can read about the vision for the College of Hawaii, as well as the first courses in civil engineering, chemistry, botany, horticulture, zoology, domestic economics and more. Copies are on sale now for $5 at the UH Mānoa Campus Thrift Shop and at the University of Hawai‘i Foundation office in Bachman Hall 105. For information, please contact Brigitte Campbell at (808) 941-5439.
