Director of Development for Community Colleges
General Description
The Director of Development for the Community Colleges will assist the Office of Community College
Development to expand its comprehensive fundraising campaign for the community colleges. The Director will identify,
cultivate, solicit and steward individuals, certain foundations, and corporations for major gifts in support of community
college initiatives within the UH Community College system. The Director will be assigned to work part-time facilitating
gifts for Windward Community College and the other half of the time facilitating gifts for other UH Community Colleges mainly
on Oʻahu.
The director will work closely with UH Central Office Departments such as Prospect Research, Gift and Estate Planning,
Foundation & Corporate Relations, Scholarship Development, and Annual Giving to accomplish his/her goals. The Director of
Development will report to the Senior Director of Development for Community Colleges at the UH Foundation and will work closely
with the Chancellor of Windward Community College.
Essential Functions
- Identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards prospects at the major gifts level.
- Manages personal portfolio of major gift prospects.
- Facilitates relationships between potential and current donors and senior administrators, faculty, volunteers, alumni and others.
- Conducts first calls to qualify prospects.
- Builds relationship strategies for prospects and coordinates nature of contacts with assigned prospects.
- Reviews prospect strategies regularly for refinement and determines what has to be done next to move the prospect closer to the point where it is appropriate to ask for a gift.
- Coordinates individual strategies for key prospects/donors in collaboration with appropriate University/UHF/Volunteer team members, including active participation in solicitations as required.
- Provides regular communication to representatives to the Chancellor, UHF and management about progress made in moving prospects toward gift closure.
- Organizes prospect review sessions with the Chancellor of Windward Community College and other Chancellors of UH Community Colleges, as appropriate. Prepares summary documents for review and engages the discussions regarding new initiatives.
- In conjunction with the Chancellor and the Senior Director of Development for Community Colleges establishes appropriate standards of personal performance.
- Develops an annual business plan and budget for inclusion in the overall UHF development plans.
- Engages prospects and donors in events and activities as appropriate.
- Creates and manages an effective pipeline of donor prospects to provide a steady flow of prospects and donors to higher levels of giving.
- Identifies and facilitates opportunities for major gift prospects and donors to serve in meaningful volunteer roles when appropriate.
- Develops strong internal and external relationships to advance the missions of UH Community Colleges and UHF.
- Participates in the campus prospect management system, development officer meetings and UHF general meetings.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is highly preferred.
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in a university fundraising environment.
- Proven success in developing major gift strategies, soliciting and closing gifts.
- Successful experience working with volunteer leaders and university administrators to ensure an integrated, organized effort.
- Strong communications skills with the ability to build consensus and cohesion within the staff.
- Ability to articulate the fundraising goals of the UH Community Colleges and Windward Community College to the public and establish special relationships with alumni and other community members.
- Unquestionable integrity and strong sense of professional ethics.
- The ability to work effectively in a large, complex and dynamic organization balancing competing priorities.
Working Conditions
Based part-time at Windward Community College and at the central UH Foundation offices at UH Mānoa campus, the position
requires travel, mostly by auto, but occasionally by other modes of transportation, and can occasionally require over night
and weekend stays. Employee must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. If not, employee must
be able to provide an acceptable alternate method of transportation.
