Dr. L. Stephen and Virginia Lau Establish Endowed Scholarship at UH Mānoa
UHM Emeritus Professor Establishes First Scholarship at Water Resource Research Center
(Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) - Dr. L. Stephen Lau and his wife Virginia
have donated $35,000 to the University of Hawai
ʻi at Mānoa to establish the L. Stephen Lau Water Research
Endowed Scholarship to benefit students and research at UHM's Water Resource Research Center (WRRC). The
fund will be used to further the knowledge of Hawai
ʻi's natural waters by providing scholarships to assist
students enrolled in any discipline within the University of Hawai
ʻi related to water resources. This is
the first scholarship ever to be established at the WRRC.
"We are very grateful to the Dr. Lau and the Lau family for their continued support of
the university and this very important water resources program," said Donna Vuchinich, president of the
UH Foundation. "Endowed scholarships are investments which will result in greater prominence for the
University of Hawai
ʻi, which means better opportunities for students after graduation. So, above all,
endowed scholarships are an investment in the students of the university."
Dr. Lau joined UHM in 1959 and is an emeritus professor of the College
of Engineering and former director of the WRRC from 1971-1990. Virginia Lau was secretary of the
Legal Education Department at Kapi
ʻolani Community College. Of their three children, two are UH graduates.
Dr. Lau retired 10 years ago, but maintains an active relationship with the WRRC, which focuses on
addressing the unique water and wastewater management problems and issues in Hawai
ʻi and other Pacific islands.
