UH Foundation Exceeds 1st Quarter Fundraising Goal

$10.2 Million Raised Includes Nearly $2 Million for Student Scholarships and Other Aid

(Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) - The University of Hawaiʻi Foundation has raised $10.2 million towards a first-quarter goal of $10 million, and overall goal of $35-40 million, for fiscal year 2005. During the first quarter, July 1- September 30, 2004, nearly $2 million was raised for student scholarships, grants, and other student programs.

"We are very grateful to our generous donors who support the students and programs at the University of Hawaiʻi," said Donna Vuchinich, president of the UH Foundation. "The level of support that we're seeing is a testament, not only to the generosity of the community, here and globally, but also to the quality of the faculty and programs throughout UH. We look forward to fostering and stewarding continued support for the university."

In addition to student programs, another area which received substantial support during the first quarter was research, with more than $5.3 million in gifts and grants, including a $3.85 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, a prestigious nationally recognized foundation.

Over 400 different account programs throughout the university's 10 campuses received gifts during the first quarter. These accounts cover a wide variety of programs throughout the system from nursing, culinary, and electrical education programs throughout the seven UH community colleges to library and information technology services at all campuses.

Of the gifts made each year to the UH Foundation, about 99 percent are designated by donors for specific purposes, such as an endowed scholarship or professorship, research, or program support for a specific unit, program or campus. There are more than 3,300 active accounts that the Foundation manages and provides accounting services for. The remaining 1 percent of gifts goes to support student callers who work to raise private gifts on behalf of the university and annual giving campaigns at the Foundation. These programs raise funds for all ten campuses of the UH System.

The UH Foundation is in the early - or "leadership" - phase of its Centennial Campaign, the most ambitious fundraising campaign ever undertaken in the state. The campaign is a systemwide development effort including all 10 campuses of the university and is anticipated to culminate in 2007, the 100th anniversary of higher education in Hawaiʻi. The public launch of the campaign is expected late 2005, at which time a campaign goal will be formally announced. As of September 30, 2004, $58.2 million has been raised as part of the campaign.
