College of Engineering Receives Annual Scholarship Fund from Actus Lend Lease
The Actus Lend Lease Outstanding Civil & Environmental Engineering
Scholarship Fund Supports Academic Excellence
(Honolulu, Hawaiʻi)
- The College of Engineering (COE) at
the University of Hawai
ʻi at Mānoa recently received a commitment
through the University of Hawai
ʻi Foundation for $30,800 from Actus
Lend Lease, a community redevelopment firm in Hawai
ʻi, to establish
the Actus Lend Lease Outstanding Civil & Environmental Engineering
Scholarship fund. The fund will be used to recruit and retain the "best
and the brightest" of Hawai
ʻi's students to study civil and
environmental engineering at the COE.
"We are grateful to Actus Lend Lease for launching
our Outstanding Scholar program with their generous contribution," said
Ron Riggs, chairman of the COE's Department of Civil & Environmental
Engineering. "The goal of this program is to encourage outstanding high school
students to attend the University of Hawai
ʻi and major in civil
engineering. While we already graduate excellent engineers, an insufficient
number of students are choosing civil engineering to meet the
local demand. We hope to garner the support of other companies so that we can
look forward to graduating a larger number of top-notch engineers
entering the local workforce."
The annual scholarship fund will assist full-time
students enrolled in the undergraduate program of the Civil
and Environmental Engineering
Department at the COE. The intent of the scholarship is to provide
full tuition and a stipend to students throughout their four
years of education. Students must meet established academic criteria.
Companies, organizations or individual donors who
provide a four-year scholarship may sponsor a named scholarship or choose
to endow a scholarship in perpetuity. Sponsoring companies may also
choose to offer summer internships to scholars for more direct interaction between the sponsor
and their scholarship student.
"We, at Actus Lend Lease, are proud to support
the University of Hawai
ʻi by sponsoring one of Hawai
ʻi's ’best
and brightest’ students to study civil and environmental engineering," said
Robert "Scotty" Scott, senior VP of construction. "Having
won 50 years of continuous work in Hawai
ʻi for the United States
Air Force and Army, our commitment to the community and its people
is essential to success."
