University of Hawaiʻi Inducts New Golden Scholars
Members of Graduating Class of 1953 Honored
(Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) -
More than 10 seniors — all University
of Hawai
ʻi graduates from the class of 1953 — and 30 previous
Golden Scholar graduates were honored at a special luncheon presented
by the University of Hawai
ʻi and its Alumni Association and organized
by the University of Hawai
ʻi Foundation.The following members of
the class of 1953 were inducted as the newest UH Golden Scholars and were
presented with medals of recognition:
John Bonsey — Kaneohe, HI
Pamela H.W. Carlyle — Kailua, HI
Jeannette Chun — Honolulu, HI
Alma Aiu Cirino — Niu Valley, HI
Thelma Diercks — Honolulu, HI
Betty Evensen — Kaneohe, HI
Frederick Fujimoto — Mililani, HI
Betty Okano — Mililani, HI
Charles Schrader — Kaneohe, HI
Kazuto Tomayasu — Aiea, HI
James R. Yano — Kailua, HI

The leadership shown by the class of 1953 and the legacy they've left behind continues to inspire
those of us still at the university and all alumni," said UH President
Evan Dobelle. "We are thankful for their many contributions, and
for all they have done to build a strong, rock-solid foundation on which
the University of Hawai
ʻi can continue to grow."
"The Golden Scholars are among our most valuable
students and teachers," said UH Foundation President Betsy Sloane. "They
bring a life-long passion for learning, coupled with a deep desire to
see the University of Hawai

The Golden Scholars recognition event began in 2000
and has been held annually to commemorate the 50th anniversary of each
