AVENUES FOR GIVING

Establish a Scholarship

The first permanently endowed scholarship was created at the UH Foundation in 1976 to benefit students attending the University of Hawaiʻi.

Since then, providing educational opportunities through private gifts has become a tradition. Today UH Foundation has over 1,200 student assistance accounts of which nearly 500 of them are endowed. In academic year 2008-2009, $8.5 million was awarded to over 4,400 students throughout the UH system.

By establishing a scholarship, you join a distinguished community of benefactors who share the common desire to ensure that able students can attend the University of Hawaiʻi regardless of their financial circumstances.

Types of Scholarships

Endowed scholarships create a permanent fund. Contributions are prudently invested to ensure that the scholarship retains its value in the years to come. Scholarships established through endowments are funded through the income earned by the endowment. The UH Foundation trustees establish the "payout rate" on an annual basis.

Annual scholarships reflect a donor’s commitment to support a scholarship for a specific number of semesters or years. Contributions are usually made and expended in the same fiscal year.

You Name the Scholarship

You may name the scholarship when the amount given meets the minimum funding requirement for an annual or endowed scholarship. Scholarships may be named for the donor or to honor parents or other loved ones.

You Establish Scholarship Criteria

Scholarship donors may specify basic criteria for selection. University representatives will use those criteria when determining the recipient.

The Best Ways to Establish Your Scholarship

Scholarships may be established in a variety of ways. An outright gift may be made via check or credit card. There may be significant tax benefits if the gift is made using appreciated securities, by establishing a charitable trust, or by giving real property. Will bequests can also create scholarships. UH Foundation staff members can assist with those options.

UH Foundation staff will work with donors to create a written agreement. The agreement reflects the purpose of the scholarship and recipient criteria as specified by the donor. The agreement also outlines the responsibilities of the UH Foundation and the University of Hawaiʻi in awarding the scholarship.
